Inside the Kite Temple: An Australian on the other side....(part II)

After numerous emails back and forth across the globe, I took that job which turned out to be in a called "Portugal", apparently just next to Spain.

Portugal from what I had heard was famous for being one of the largest producers of cork and their custard pastries.

I didn't see Kiteboarding destinations on the guide so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Together with my loyal Kite board, ipod and a bag capable of blocking the Panama Canal, I bought a one-way ticket, packed up my house and headed to the shores of this far and distant land with little knowledge of what was to be my home for the next 4 months.

Wait wait wait, first hurdle. How the hell do you pronounce João?

I was taken to my new house 15 minutes or 2 hours depending on the traffic south of Lisbon in an area called Charneca da Caparica.


25 Abril's Bridge

I've dropped my bags and headed to the last day of the Portuguese National Kiteboarding Round at what was to be my new office, Nova Vaga Beach. It was there I met the majority of the KT crew for the first time and where I got a glimpse of the conditions that lay before me.

The one thing everybody seemed to ask me when I first arrived was whether or not it was scary to come over by myself and not know the local language. It probably should have been if not for the magic of Kiteboarding.



From the moment I jumped off the plane everything felt so normal, sure they drive a lot faster than what I am use to and they eat some crazy stuff but Kiteboarding was our common interest, we were all part of the same mad wind obsessed family.



So the days rolled past and after a week of checking out the sights and sounds I was assigned my first class. A group of three Portuguese friends ready to start from scratch, to have a Baptism. Having not taught a group of 3 before and definitely not three Portuguese, it was daunting but like the rest of the locals on the beach, they were incredibly nice and easy going.

Before long teaching was enjoyable and if not anything else, exciting due to the fact that every couple of minutes there was a kite smashing on the ground or tangles 25 meters in the air. At the peak of summer, I was happy to be on the beach and not out on the water, you could argue sea traffic lights needed to be installed.

KiteTrip Brasil 2006 - reviews

Aqui ficam os reports do Hotel e dos Spots por onde passámos nestes 16 dias:

Hotel Arutam - muito simpático, fica-se a conhecer toda a gente em 3 dias, só 9 quartos, muito espaçosos, é o 1º hotel á direita, quem vem da Lagoa do Caupe para o centro do Cumbuco, a uns 4kms do centro da vila.

Lagoa do Cauipe - muito pouca gente a andar lá em Outubro, andava-se muito bem. Em Novembro já se notou a diferença, muitos mais kites, então ao fim de semana nem se fala!

Hora de almoço

Lagoa de Taiba - sempre com pouca gente e melhor vento que na Lagoa do Cauipe. Simplesmente 5 estrelas, cuidado com as pedras no fundo da lagoa, tem algumas zonas recheadas delas. Fora isso, sem duvida o melhor spot para treinar Freestyle. Tem umas ondinhas mesmo em frente.

Fotos? tava tudo a andar!! :)

Mundaú ? o spot mais bonito de todos, mas é impossível fazer lá kite. Corrente super forte impossibilita a subida ao vento, mesmo com 20nós, e o vento é bastante rajado! Não recomendo a ninguém.

Pousada em Fleixeiras

Paracuru - excelente spot, muito bonito, sempre com bom vento, mas muito pouco espaço para tantos riders. Uma media de 20 kites no ar. Os recifes à volta também assustam, e em mundança de Lua, com a maré vazia comprovo pessoalmente que dá para bater com a prancha no recife, ou seja, é MESMO muito raso vaso! É muito bonito o spot, mas em Novembro fica lotadissimo!

Inside the Kite Temple: An Australian on the other side.... (part I)

Early May and the Australian winter was closing in. The clouds were beginning to roll into my home town of Adelaide taking with them my opportunity to kite and putting the pressure on me to work out my plans for the rest of the year.



It had been one of the best Australian summers I had ever had with my close friends in Oz filled with seemingly endless days at the beach, backyard barbies and countless funny moments. It was enough to make me re-think my plans to head overseas.

I had four options and time was running out to be over-particular with my destination. It came down to working in Serbia and Montenegro, Dominican Republic, Canary Islands or I could continue with university? Actually, there really were only three options. Serbia and Montenegro being the front runner at the time, there was one other place I had seen on the internet but never paid much attention to, a place located almost geographically opposite my location.

Had I a shovel and doug straight down, I would maybe had been only a 15 minute cab ride away. The website unfortunately had all the words in the wrong order although the pictures did look appealing.

They wrote back much to my surprise with no strange out of space language in sight.

This company in that far away place was actually looking for a Kitesurf instructor, even though I had not seen their advert, being an English speaker only did not seem to bother them either, and I could also leave at my desired time. Was I about to enter into the underworld of human-trafficking or was this too good to be true?

KiteTrip Brasil 2006

A viagem começa no dia 26 de Outubro, com uma escala massacrante em Cabo Verde, onde ficamos 2h à espera de reabastecer. À chegada a Fortaleza tínhamos carro no aeroporto à nossa espera para alugar (45 reais por dia), sem AC, que isto no Brasil funciona bem é a ar natural!!

Chegamos ao hotel pela 1h da manhã, fomos super bem recebidos pelo "Marzinho", segurança do hotel, que depois acabou por ser um companheiro porreiro com muitas histórias para contar!

Entramos directos para o quarto, que prontamente aprovamos e o Marzinho deixou-nos descansar e só tratar de papeladas no dia seguinte. Daí em diante foram 16 dias de kite, passando na Lagoa do Cauípe, Lagoa de Taiba, Paracuru e Mundaú.

O vento foi uma constante, não houve um único dia sem vento! Dias para 13m, dias para 11m e dias para 8.5m! mas sempre vento decente para treinar e subir bem ao vento, nada de caminhadas a pé!! O resto do report deixo para todos verem mais tarde em filme, que está no momento a ser editado... e ainda um review dos spots.

Quem vai agora, informe-se de sítios para jantar, no Cumbuco há imensos que são bons e não são caros como por exemplo o "Gaucho" que é caro para os preços que se conseguem arranjar.

Enfim, foi uma viagem fantástica, 15 dias muito agradáveis. Ah! Não! Não foram 15... foram 16! pois é, embarcamos no avião da TACV para voltar, mas uma avaria impediu que prosseguíssemos viagem. Conseguimos voltar ao mesmo hotel em que estávamos no Cumbuco com tudo incluído! Basicamente, ofereceram-nos o 16º dia de kite, que ainda para mais não estava nada mau para 12m e 13m!!

Por Favor...Diverte-te!

Chegou ao fim a promoção de Verão da Fanta intitulada "Por Favor...Diverte-te!". Como prémios a Fanta entregou uma fantástica carrinha pão-de-forma e 120 cursos de kitesurf.

A carrinha foi ganha pelo Filipe Serrano e nós... ficamos só com a sua imagem :)


Um dos outdoors da iniciativa

Desta forma, e com a parceria das Escolas de Kitesurf da Kite Temple, foi possível introduzir a modalidade a 120 novos praticantes. O vencedor trazia 2 amigos e juntos experimentavam a modalidade, cerificando-se com o nível 1 do programa IKO.

Independente da vontade de experimentar, a animação foi uma constante ao longo de todos os cursos, tendo-se revelado como uma excelente iniciativa de divulgação da modalidade.





Muitos destes vencedores Fanta vão ser nossos companheiros na água!!!
