nascimento e hoje já foi o primeiro "treino de adaptação" ao meio
aquatico. é assim que se formam os campeões!

Inside the Kite Temple: An Australian on the other side....(part IV)

The surfing in Portugal I discovered early on has an already strong following and reputation as being one of the best places in Europe. Places like Ericeria just north east of Lisbon and the Algarve are the reasons why it has such a reputation. Amazing surfing opportunities so close to the population and something I back home have to travel a couple of hours to get.

As far as the conditions for kiting in Portugal, it appears Portugal is fast becoming famous for its summer winds and endless coastline of opportunity.

In the Lisbon area alone, the flat water 30km´s south of Lagoa Albufeira to the rampaging waves and freakish wind of infamous Guincho beach on the western tip of the capital.

My first day at Guincho was a quick insight into what that beach is all about. Twenty-five knot plus wind, rolling waves out the back and beach filled with locals Portuguese girls.

Not a bad place to be, especially when all my friends back home are crouching around the heater.

Peniche - 10/12/2006

As previsões não eram muito animadoras? 15 nós de NE até às 13 horas e depois? caía? Falámos com os locais e? decidimos arriscar. O dia estava espectacular e valia bem a viagem. Fomos de véspera para chegar bem cedinho mas mesmo assim não conseguimos ser os primeiros :)

O frio era? muito!! Vento NE já é frio, e a cruzar toda a baía de Peniche ainda ficava pior! Mas com tanto sol a aquecer vamos lá embora. A previsão acertara e estavam mesmo 15 nós. Montámos os 11m para aproveitar o mar que estava e entrámos com vontade. Meia hora depois o vento subiu, aumentando ainda mais no meio da baía pelo efeito de canal.

Não deu para andar todo o dia pelo frio que estava mas aguentou-se até às 14 horas. Depois da sessão foi uma almoçarada pelas terras do Oeste!

Lagoa de Albufeira - 08/12/2006

Muito vento e muito frio. O spot já é conhecido por estar repleto de kites mas este sábado estavam apenas cerca de 20 riders na agua, muito menos do que é habitual. Decidimos entrar depois de passarem as nuvens carregadas de agua. Com o sol a aparecer ficou menos frio (era o que parecia de dentro do carro). O vento estava forte, de norte, acima dos 20 nós.

O mar fora da lagoa estava? GIGANTE!! Nos sets entrava pela Lagoa dentro, fazendo lembrar a onda brasileira do Amazonas, a Pororoca. Ainda deu para brincar na onda que se estendia uns bons 100 metros pela Lagoa.

Quase já sem sol, ainda houve quem quisesse entrar para ter a Lahoa só para ele? e conseguiu :D

KiteProTuga - o DVD!

Pois é, um fim-de-semana bastante activo e só agora tivémos tempo de vos contar o que aconteceu no lançamento do DVD KiteProTuga. A Festa de lançamento decorreu em Santos, com um público considerável. Vieram riders de longe, como o Gonçalo Gomes e os habituais de Peniche, todos com muita curiosidade sobre o resultado final do primeiro DVD 100% português, uma produção Lufada d'Ar Fresco.

Depois de uma jantarada com os intervenientes e amigos, chegou o momento esperado de projecção do DVD em ecrã gigante!

As cenas são muitas, desde treino na Lagoa de Albufeira, a Espodende, às ondas do Guincho e de Santa Cruz, ao espelho de água de Alvor. Pois é, recomenda-se! Quem assistiu adorou e levou uns exemplares para casa!

Para além dos spots temos os riders, os melhores riders portugueses contracenam a fazer o que mais gostam.

Inside the Kite Temple: An Australian on the other side....(part III)

Days past and teaching became easier, new methods evolved, especially due to the sometimes lacking English language of the locals and my Portuguese being in its infancy, hand gestures were at the ready.

Over time teaching became generally easier through trial and error. The first thing that struck me about the Portuguese Kiteboarding community was the difference in age compared to the average Australian Kiter. My home spot back in Adelaide is filled with young kids eager to get out and claim their spot on the beach whereas in Portugal, the vast majority of kiters are 25 plus.

The other thing which is super cool and I was proud to be a part of is the close knit Kiteboarding community and bond everybody seems to share which is no doubt helped along by the numerous events organized by those within the sport.

Events like Kite Temple's ´Kite Summer Festival´ and the Downwind rides from Peniche to Santa Cruz where you get the opportunity to kite for 30km along a deserted coastline with awesome waves and amazing scenery.

l actually only got the opportunity to kite 20km due to transforming my 11m Wipika Matrix into two 5.5m. But hey, the 10km drive back was also nice....

All these events not only help promote the sport in a super positive manner but it brings the whole kiting community closer together. Just ask Bruno who I shared a Matrix 13.5m kite with after the Kite Summer Festival beach party and used it as a sleeping bag.

Bruno's kite selection was perfect, had he of gone for a high aspect, we would both of had cold feet.
